The excitement of growing a business is what creates the energy to get through the long hours and sleepless nights. Wouldn’t you sleep better if you had a plan? Wouldn’t you feel better if you knew how you were going to make payroll? Wouldn’t the long hours seem worth it if you could create some financial freedom to enjoy the fruits of your labor? Wouldn’t you feel more empowered if you understood all the components of your business and had a handle on the performance within each of those areas?
Whether you are a start up or an established business, the thought of growing your business can sometimes be an overwhelming reality. Understanding where you are today and taking that snapshot creates a baseline for improvement. It will give you the perspective you need to identify what needs to happen and how quickly.
There are three components of growth:
- History. Review of where you came from and what you did to get there
- Present. Clear picture of where you are today
- Future. Where you want to go
Now that you have established your growth components, it’s time to prioritize and pull your strategies together to make change fast. Making decisions about your business is not always easy, however with careful consideration and prioritization, can be just the thing to help you become “unstuck”.
There are so many ways a business can get stuck:
- Revenue. The money stops coming in or worse, you are unable to collect money you have already rendered products or services for, how about pushing through that imaginary ceiling
- Technology. Need to upgrade outdated technology or purchase new equipment to compete
- Ideas. The well runs dry on ideas
- People. Your people are not contributing, morale is poor, or worse you are unable to do the job with your current talent
- Products/Services. Quality is critical, people will spend money if it is for a product of service that delivers on what it sells
- Managing complexities. Anything from personality conflicts and education deficiencies to streamlining processes and creating efficiencies
The list could go on and on and will differ with each company, business owner and team of employees. Give yourself the gift of a 2nd set of eyes from an objective source. Prioritizing your “stucks” will help you segment, tackle and accomplish them without getting overwhelmed. Planning and implementation is not the boring back office “stuff” that just happens. Making sure fulfillment is delivered at the highest quality could be the difference between you getting a referral or return customer or your competitor getting them!
Moving ahead, pretend for a moment that you are reaching the end of your business enthusiasm. Maybe you are fried and ready to sell your business to the highest bidder. Maybe you want to retire. Maybe you are considering acquisitions and mergers (A&M). Or maybe your children are ready to step in to run the family business. Whatever the driving force is behind your decision, be sure you are positioning yourself and your business in the most attractive way.
Consider the following:
- Is your P&L attractive to a potential buyer or investor?
- Are your children educated on all facets of running the family business?
- Do you have all your debt paid off?
- Will you walk away from the transaction with enough money in the bank or are you planning on starting a new business or going back to work?
- Have you reviewed all your contracts to ensure penalties are not an issue?
There are many considerations; these are just a few…
You and your business deserve the best chance of success! Investing in coaching may be a “frivolous” expense, but I will challenge you to ask yourself, “How can I not afford to engage a coach?” It’s very similar to the example, “you have to spend money to make money” or even better, how many business owners have you heard say, “I’m cutting marketing spend to save on expenses”?
There are two expenses you CAN NOT afford to cut as business owners – Marketing and People!!!
You can be smarter about your investments, you can scale your spending, and you can monitor the return on your investment (ROI) and be more selective. But you cannot afford to cut expenses when it comes to developing your people (or yourself) or attracting new business.
